Overview
Tarangire National Park is one of Tanzania’s most captivating safari destinations, covering an expansive area of approximately 2,850 square kilometers. Located just about 120 kilometers (a 2-hour drive) southwest of Arusha, the park offers an easy and rewarding escape into the heart of the wild. Tarangire is especially renowned for its massive herds of elephants and its ancient baobab trees that dot the landscape, creating a striking and unforgettable panorama. The best time to visit is during the dry season, from June to October, when the park becomes a gathering ground for wildlife as they converge around the Tarangire River—the only permanent water source in the area.
During this time, you can witness extraordinary concentrations of animals including elephants, zebras, wildebeest, giraffes, buffaloes, lions, leopards, and a rich diversity of birds—over 500 species recorded. Unlike the busier parks, Tarangire offers a quieter, more intimate safari experience with fewer vehicles, allowing travelers to truly connect with nature. Its blend of dramatic landscapes, seasonal wildlife migrations, and peaceful atmosphere makes Tarangire a truly unique and magical stop on any northern Tanzania safari circuit.
