The 4-Day Mount Meru expedition is the most highly recommended itinerary for those seeking the perfect balance of wildlife discovery and high-altitude success. Standing at 4,566m, Mount Meru is not merely a “warm-up” for Kilimanjaro; it is a world-class destination in its own right. By extending the trek to four days, we provide a more relaxed descent, allowing for deeper exploration of the unique volcanic features and the diverse wildlife of Arusha National Park. This journey takes you through montane forests, high-altitude moorlands, and across a spectacular “knife-edge” crater rim, all while offering the most dramatic views of Mount Kilimanjaro found anywhere in Tanzania.

Your journey begins with a professional orientation at your hotel. Our Lead Expedition Guides will conduct a Vital Technical Briefing, which includes a multi-point gear audit and safety protocol review. Because Mount Meru involves trekking through big-game territory, we will finalize the coordination with your armed park ranger and discuss the specific physiology of the Meru ascent.
After a scenic drive through Arusha National Park, we finalize park formalities at the Momella Gate. Accompanied by an armed park ranger, we begin our walking safari. You will trek through open grasslands where giraffes, buffalo, and zebras are frequently sighted. The trail then enters the lush montane forest, passing the massive “Fig Tree Arch.” We arrive at Miriakamba Hut as the afternoon light filters through the canopy.
Today, the trail climbs steeply through the forest and into the Giant Heather zone. We ascend the wooden steps of Elephant Ridge, which provides an incredible vantage point to view the Meru Crater floor and the perfectly formed Ash Cone. Upon reaching Saddle Hut, we enjoy a hot lunch before taking a short acclimatization hike to the summit of Little Meru (3,820m). We return to the hut for an early dinner and a final summit briefing.
The Defining Moment. We rise at midnight for the final push. The trail leads through Rhino Point (3,800m) and follows an exhilarating, narrow ridge of volcanic rock and ash. As the sun rises over the glaciers of Kilimanjaro, you will reach Socialist Peak (4,566m). After celebrating at the summit, we descend back to Saddle Hut for brunch and then continue down to Miriakamba Hut for a restorative night’s sleep.
On our final day, we take a leisurely descent through the forest. This is an excellent opportunity to spot Black and White Colobus monkeys and diverse birdlife. We reach the Momella Gate, where you will receive your official Mount Meru Summit Certificates. Our vehicle will be waiting to transport you back to your hotel for a well-deserved hot shower and celebration.
